I heard about the Erasmus programme from an advertisement and I found the idea interesting . After passing all exams at my university I analysed the long list of the receiving universities to find the best one for myself. My choice was the Kassel University in Germany. There were my reasons I wanted to go there for. First of all, I have never been to this country before, secondly I really wanted to get to know its culture and last but not least, Germany has a really strong economic system and because of my study field, I wanted to experience this in real life and learn from German people.
When I arrived there I felt a little bit scared being alone in the new country. I didn’t know anyone. However, when it came to the first meeting with the students I understood that the year would change my life and I was really excited about it. We started to get to know each other and I met a lot of cool people from all around the world. It was a really interesting experience because some cultures were similar to mine and some were completely different. Therefore, my message to other fellow students is:’ don’t be scared – be open-minded and you’ll have fun. ‘
I spent 24/7 with all these happy Erasmus people. We were studying together, partying, strolling around the city and helping each other because we had the same problems. The Kassel University staff were also really helpful and happy that we chose their university. Then the lectures began. The system of learning was different from the one I was used to but I liked it even though it was hard for me at times. The lectures were in English but I was also participating in German language course. I’m really happy that Erasmus gave me the opportunity to improve my language skills and right now I feel confident to speak English. Moreover, we got to know German people during that year and they turned out to be cool. We have a lot in common with them. Surprisingly, some of them were speaking Russian because of their family roots, so for me Germany felt like a piece of the motherland. We spent our time having fun!!! I was never bored sitting at home. We were traveling to the nearby cities, on the vacation around the world and it was super cool that I found people as crazy as me on the Erasmus. What is more, we were cooking for each other, so I had a chance to try the cuisine from various countries such as Spain, Korea, USA, Turkey, Brazil and many other.
For all the future Erasmus participants or those who have not decided if they should they go or not, I would definitely say:’ Of course ,DO IT! It is an unforgettable experience in your life. I’m super happy right now because I found my best friend on Erasmus. She is from Czech and I can’t imagine that someone from another culture can understand me better than my own folk. We are super close right now and even want to study together. We visited each other’s home countries and shared our cultures. I’m so happy that I have taken part in Erasmus this year! Don’t hesitate to take this opportunity and go!!!
